Nowadays portions are bigger than in times past, and we are always offered as the first point of sale the large, super-size, double, and so on. So it is not surprising that the average waistline is growing.
Managing portion sizes is key to healthy weight loss and recently quoted in the media singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, the 40-year-old mum-of-two revealed that her secret to staying in shape is SMALLER servings.
She said: “I don’t have anything banned from my diet. I’m not one of the health freaks who believe in not eating any sugar or leaving dairy products out.
“There are a number of weird diets out there but I don’t follow them. I eat almost everything, only in moderation.” So forget counting calories just focus on eating the right SIZE portions as we use to many years ago.
Interestingly, in the last 20 years portion sizes have doubled, and each size category has been nudged up so that for example a small size now is in most cases actually a medium, and so on, with medium being a large, and a large now being referred to as super size!!! This is not only in the food and beverages, but even plate sizes; 20 years ago your dinner plate was approximately 3 inches smaller than nowadays.
So I have put together this simple Picture Associated Food Portion Guide. Once you’ve studied it, you can instantly associate the portion size for each food group.
